When ignorance is praised and facts are disregarded or skewered

[PUBLISHED JUNE 16, 2010] People who lack the intelligence or adequate knowledge to debate or understand complex poltical theories are easily manipulated into internalizing the exaggerated speech of shrewd politicians and pundits who often prey on the badly informed and uninformed to undermine their opponent and advance their agenda. They inject negative messages into their minds that are blatantly false because they know the uniformed lacks knowledge to separate fact from fiction.

The North Iowa Tea Party paid for a billboard on South Federal Avenue in Mason City, Iowa that compared President Obama’s economic policy to that of Adolf Hitler, the leader of the Nazi Party, and Soviet dictator Vladimir Lenin. It was not only an unintelligent argument for opposing Obama’s economic philosophy, but it also showcased how ignorance disregards facts that disprove false assertions.

Adolf Hitler was responsible for the murder of as many as “17 million civilians” of which six million of them were Jews. He also murdered “Romanis, ethnic Poles, Soviet civilians, Soviet prisoners of war, people with disabilities, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, and other political and religious opponents.” He was a man hell bent on gaining power so that he could rule with an iron fist by any means necessary. He was a vile human being with a thrust for power that rivaled any other dictator in the world then and now.

Though Hitler's economic policy (after he murdered millions of people) was forward thinking and innovative and spurred economic growth, the underpinning of everything he did was to control the minds of the populous by convincing them that he was their savior and the country could not survive without his leadership. Whatever he did was about mind control, and that's a fact. How can this despicable human being, for any reason, be compared to any U.S. President whether it is Barack Obama or George W. Bush?

Russian born Vladimir Lenin was in law school when he became interested in politics after reading the economic philosophy of a German political economist and theorist named Karl Marx. Lenin, a revolutionary and Communist politician and leader of the Bolsheviks, expanded Marx's economic theory known as Marxism, which became known as Marxism-Leninism. The idea of Leninism became the foundation for Soviet socialism.

Political theorists would vigorously argue that comparing Obama's economic philosophy to that of Leninism is evident that those doing the comparison are ignorant about the meaning of socialism and the political ideology of Vladimir Lenin, who was a dictator.

Marxism contends that the economic interest of the capitalist (corporation) and the economic interest of the worker are for all intents and purposes at odds. The worker wants a fair wage commensurate with his experience and skill level, a safe working environment, and job security. The capitalist wants to expand markets to increase profitability, which often times mean the worker is exploited to minimize the cost of doing business. Low wages is one way a capitalist exploits a worker. This creates a conflict between the capitalist and the worker because markets expand and they contract. When the markets contract, that eats into the capitalist’s profit and threatens the worker’s job security.

Academia and political theorists have debated Karl Marx’s economic philosophy for decades. Marx believed that just as feudalism (where the land owner exploited the worker) gave rise to capitalism (where the capitalist’s sole commitment is to making a profit), the worker would eventually gain an understanding of how he's being exploited and revolt, giving rise to a socialist revolution.

Marxism touts that a small minority of the population controls capital (money). Today, out of 300 million Americans counted in the 2000 Census, one-percent of the population controls all of the wealth. That's an inequality that millions of Americans see as a problem. The answer is to level the field of opportunities so that every citizen has an equal and a fair chance at realizing their dream.

The government is the only avenue the worker has for leveling the playing field. Without government laws and regulations to stop the capitalist (corporation) from exploiting the worker, the worker would have no rights. The government bars the capitalist from having the worker to labor for long hours without a break or lunch. The government established a minimum wage that the capitalist will pay the worker. They passed laws to make sure the capitalist pays the worker time and half for working more than 40 hours a week. The government also created laws to prevent the capitalist (corporation) from manipulating and monopolizing the markets and from predatory practices.

Obama has repeatedly stated that he does not believe in too much government intervention in the free markets, but the steps he took to help the economy rebound were necessary to prevent a depression. That does not make him a socialist. He believes in promoting “individual success and social cohesion”, and that “government and corporations are bound by obligations to citizens, like a clean environment, education and health care.”

Ignorance is not something to praise or support. It is dangerous and should be treated as such. It would have behooved the North Iowa Tea Party that put up the billboard, which now has been taken down because of public outrage, to have come up with a better argument for opposing Obama economic philosophy than comparing him to Hitler and Lenin.

Civil rights leader and icon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was also characterized as a communist, a socialist by people who were threatened by the changing demographics of America. They used similar tactics to try to silence him and squash his mission to root out inequalities and prejudices, to make America live up to its promise of freedom and justice for all citizens regardless of class, color, creed, race, or religion.

Obama believes in a capitalist society. He also strongly believes that government is obligated to advocate for the worker and to protect the worker from exploitation by the capitalist.

I don't know if you realize just how right you are:

From the Los Angeles Times
A break-in to end all break-ins

In 1971, stolen FBI files exposed the government's domestic spying program.
By Allan M. Jalon
ALLAN M. JALON is a longtime contributor to The Times and other publications on issues of culture and media.

March 8, 2006 THIRTY-FIVE YEARS ago today, a group of anonymous activists broke into the small, two-man office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Media, Pa., and stole more than 1,000 FBI documents that revealed years of systematic wiretapping, infiltration and media manipulation designed to suppress dissent.

The Citizens' Commission to Investigate the FBI, as the group called itself, forced its way in at night with a crowbar while much of the country was watching the Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier fight. When agents arrived for work the next morning, they found the file cabinets virtually emptied.
Within a few weeks, the documents began to show up mailed anonymously in manila envelopes with no return address in the newsrooms of major American newspapers. When the Washington Post received copies, Atty. Gen. John N. Mitchell asked Executive Editor Ben Bradlee not to publish them because disclosure, he said, could "endanger the lives" of people involved in investigations on behalf of the United States.

Nevertheless, the Post broke the first story on March 24, 1971, after receiving an envelope with 14 FBI documents detailing how the bureau had enlisted a local police chief, letter carriers and a switchboard operator at Swarthmore College to spy on campus and black activist groups in the Philadelphia area.

(FBI's letter to Martin Luther King, Jr. urging him to commit suicide, sent just before he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize)

Ignorance has always been a political/religious weapon as the two often go together. From a European perspective, the present political/social climate in the US is an extremely worrysome phenomenon, considering this shift to the extreme right and this mixing of religious fundamentalisms precepts that is creating a sort of modern-day version of National Socialism within the Republican Party. It is a dangerous trend aptly used by populist politicians like Sara Palin and others like her, to further a political agenda that, if successful, could have dire consequences not only for the US, but for the world in general. These bunch make G.W.Bush look like Demostenes.

"The broad masses of a population are more amenable to the appeal of rhetoric than to any other force."

"The great masses of people will fall more easily victim to a big lie than to a small one" Adolf Hitler; Mein Kampf.

These are unfortunately very true statements and very sad truths, and the typical aversion and ingrained "anti-intellectualism" ingrained in Anglo-Saxons societies has much to do with the perceived threat, as was the case of Dr. Martin Luther King, represent to those who rely on a manipulation of the broad mass of people to keep their "Status Quo" regarding political and economic hegemony over a nation.

Very interesting article indeed. I will put you on my watch list. You might be interested to read an article on my column, "Obama: The President that came too early", and a few others. take Care.

They use fear to control people. Throughout history it has always been the same. By comparing Obama (or any politician) to Hitler they hope to make the populace fear him so that they can step in and 'save' them.

Great article. I really enjoyed reading it.

Reminds me of the Bush II years where threats of terrorism where used to skew public opinion...especially around election time.

Very true. Almost every atrocity in history begins with fear mongering.

Hitler: Fear of the Jew and imperfect people.

Witch Burnings: Fear of the Devil and witchcraft.

Crusades: Fear of the infidel.

Iraq: Fear that Saddam had nukes and was crazy enough to launch them at the US.

The list could go on and on. If we're looking for it, it's almost transparent, but people somehow still fall for the fear mongering.

It Aint So

If we're looking for it, it's almost transparent, but people somehow still fall for the fear mongering.

Exactly...like the Dems saying that Republicans want old people and the sick to just die.

Or Obama saying if we dont pass this stimulous plan, the economy will plunge into an abyss.

Or Obama saying in an interview that if Congress does not pass health care legislation that will bring down costs, the federal government "will go bankrupt."

Now...who's zooming who?

"Barack Obama - Change we can step in"

I would assume both sides have used scare tactics in the past to push their own agenda. The thing is, that if people would stop being dupes and question their representatives, these tactics would be less effective.

Well written and well explained, Thank you Maam.

It won't get much traction among those that are led by the nose as you can see. It was submitted 10 hours ago and the only comments are from people that have been aware of this problem from day 1.

To some extent, preaching to the choir. To the extreme it is a testimonial to the truth being laid out and the willing ignorant parties are holding their fingers in their ears and yelling "La-la-la-la" until this article goes away and back on the Socialist/Marxist bandwagon they will jump again as if this was never mentioned.

Stud, the lack of comments is probably attributable to this segment of the audience on Newsvine. Too many big words and complex theories for them.

The GOP some years ago figured out it could wrap its economic agenda inside a jacket of social conservatism (family values, traditional marriage, anti-abortion activism, etc.). It's a Trojan Horse eagerly embraced by the Tea Party. Unless it's defeated we'll find ourselves in a society where poverty, hunger and untreated illness will be as commonplace as they were in the 1930's.

Thanks for the great article. Fear and ignorance seem to be the new weapon of choice for political manipulation. Unfortunately, it seems to be working all too frequently.
