Dear Democrats in Congress:
Fair or unfair, “cowards” and “spineless” are labels the Democratic Party's voters have attached to democratic politicians for not having the courage of their convictions since I first voted in 1976, at age 23, for Jimmy Carter. Thirty-seven years later, the base is still using those labels to describe how inept Democrats seem to be at dealing with the Republican Party.
Instead of strategizing how to beat these predators, Democrats strategize how not to lose to them. You crack under pressure, take our money and then take our vote for granted. Those senators and house members in so-called red states seem more interested in placating to the 65% of white voters that do not and will not vote for Democrats.
You either don’t care or don’t respect the anger and frustration seething in the base about how Senator Harry Reid and Senate Democrats are consenting to Senate Republicans, who mind you are in the minority, pissing all over them with this damn 60 vote threshold to get anything done. As the majority, they come off looking powerless and weak.
How many times do we have to see Harry Reid or some congressional democrat on television or read one of their tweets whining about how Republicans are obstructing President Obama’s executive and judicial nominees? If the situation was reversed and Democrats were obstructing say a President Romney’s nominees (thank goodness that scenario will never play out), Republicans would have changed the rules in his first term and boasted about it. If those pathetic hypocrites regained control of the Senate, changing the filibuster rule would be the very first thing they do to remove any leverage Democrats would have in blocking their agenda. There would be no payback.
Unlike the Republican base, Democratic voters seem just as scared of rocking the boat, scared of not holding on to seats because they cannot count on the core groups of the party (African Americans and Hispanics) showing up at the polls every election. That leaves Democrats trying to win over white voters who traditionally vote for Republicans. That’s why we see, even Democrats in so-called blue states, handwringing and pandering.
President Obama has done more to advance progressive causes than any Democratic president since President Johnson signed the 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act, and I challenge anyone to prove me wrong. Barack Obama was the only presidential candidate in a general election, democrat or republican, who ran two campaigns on raising taxes on the rich and won both times. He was successful in getting Republicans to vote for a tax hike. When Bill Clinton raised taxes on the rich, he did not get a single GOP vote. Despite fierce criticism of him for just vacationing with his family, he has weathered gracefully the body blows thrown at him from a bias media damned and determined to undermine his presidency while congressional democrats hide in the corner, and some even join in and throw rocks at him.
President Obama risked his presidency to pass the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in the first year of his first term. He kept his campaign promise though some cowardly Democrats and even some advisers urged him to wait. On the contrary, President Clinton tried once and failed and never tried again during his eight years. President Obama did not run from the Affordable Care Act during his re-election campaign, and Dems picked up seats in the Senate and the House. The ACA was not an albatross around his neck. He demonstrated the courage of his conviction and won.
Damn those Democrats who have turned their backs on President Obama because of a freaking malfunctioning website.
Either you believe in how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has already benefitted Americans with employer-based insurance and will benefit the under and uninsured or not. If you do, then you should be standing with the President even while the website is malfunctioning. Instead you have let the lame stream media (channeling Sarah Palin…oh god help me) control the narrative and forced President Obama into a position where he had to placate to your fear of losing your seat because of policy cancellations, which is routinely done every year, in the junk health insurance market.
If you lose your seat, it won’t be because of the ACA or the website glitches, it will be because the base feels demoralized by your cowardice. Running away from “Obamacare” or running against it is not a winning strategy, it is a losing one.
There is no creative thinking about how to win, just tactics to prevent you from losing. Everybody knows the way to draw media attention to your cause is to do something outrageous. House Democrats, who don’t have the filibuster to block Speaker Boehner’s agenda, need to come up with something creative to draw attention to the absolute crazies in the GOP caucus. It will take you not being politically correct and willing to shake things up even it means breaking the rules. Republicans do it every single day and it works. Instead Democrats go on MSNBC and preach to the choir by whining to Ed Schultz about how the big bad Republicans are making life harder for the poor and the middle class. You need to expose these people to the larger population, and since NBC News is not going to cover complaints about GOP obstruction, no matter how valid they are, then you have to come up with something creative to effectively expose these cruel and heartless people instead of just complaining about them.
I was never so proud of Democrats than I was seeing all of you unite to fend off the GOP during the shutdown and debt ceiling debacle. However, that unity ended when the shutdown ended and you returned to what seem to be your most comfortable position, that of cowards.
You started attacking your democratic president, who won two…count them…two historic elections as a black man with a Muslim name, and joined the media frenzy about the website. Just imagine if you all had remained united and stood up to the media lies and distortions about the ACA, how less potent the attacks would have been. But you did not; instead, you tucked your tail between your legs and threw President Obama under the bus.
I have voted in every presidential, local, and state election and stood up for democratic principles since 1976. I do it because I love my country, believe in the platform of the Democratic Party, and see it as my duty to exercise my right to have a voice about the direction of this great Nation. I speak for many other loyal Democrats who are absolutely fed up with Republicans obstruction and unprecedented number of filibusters in the Senate.
The Grand Old Party is consistent and united in their efforts to deny President Obama any legislative victory, but what is the senate majority leader Harry Reid's excuse for giving them free reign to do as they please with all the consequences to the Country and none to the obstructionists?
President Obama nominees deserve an up or down vote. Period! It is long past time to use the nuclear option to stop Republicans from behaving like a pack of Rottweilers running around intimidating and threatening Democrats who they see as Poodles.
Maybe some of you have outlived your usefulness, just been there too long. Maybe you don’t have any fight left in you. If that is the case, do the party a favor and step down and let new blood, who have the courage and the spine to stand up to the cruelty and heartlessness we see in the Republican Party. We need fighters because Republicans are not about to change their ways, and it will be even worse if we are fortunate to have a Democratic female president in 2016 because you know how they feel about women.
