White Americans, majority of them on the far-right and aligned with the Tea Party and some southern state Democrats, reacted to the election of Barack Obama in 2008, the first African American President, in a much more racially charged and radically insensitive way than whites did in 1947 when the Brooklyn Dodgers signed Jackie Robinson, which effectively integrated major league baseball. White objection to Robinson was not muddled in political correctness…he was a black man and simply not good enough or deserving of the same opportunities afforded a white baseball player. They spoke it out loud and were unapologetic.
Republicans resist the notion that their objection to Barack Obama is racist. They view attacks on them as liberal bullsh**. However, they don’t shy away from being labeled xenophobic. These far-right radicals have expressed in words and deed an intense fear and dislike of Barack Hussein Obama because they perceived him as foreign, not American. They say his name alone proves their point. They see this as a legitimate excuse to oppose him. What a bunch of idiots.
It’s not lost on anyone that the resources available to haters to spread their venom were unimaginable in 1947. There was no Internet or social media or a conglomerate of news organizations that gave a platform to these people or groups like them to espouse their bigotry and racism.
The way our modern news organizations cover stories involving non-whites help perpetuate a false perception, which feed into white Americans’ negative views of minorities and they use these misconceptions to justify their intolerance of other races. So take a bow news media, you have successfully helped white people to become afraid of people that don’t look like them.
However, you don’t get to take a bow Republican Party for your racial insensitivity and vile comments. You get to be voted out of office. That will be your reward for your hatred and obstruction. Congratulations, you deserve it.
